Subject: Re: QZ Car From: Maurice Leutenegger Date: Fri, 29 May 2009 15:36:27 -0400 To: David Cohen CC: Marc Gagne , Stan Owocki David et al., I think that I agree that we should not include windtabs in the Carina special issue, but rather should write our own letter. Just as a start towards writing something up, I've done as Stan suggested, and plotted a comparison of the transmission of e^-Tau, windtabs, and the exospheric approximation, all as a function of tau. For the exospheric approximation, I've assumed that we can see down to R_1, which is given by R_1 = max (tau, R_0). In these plots, I assume U_0 ( = R_* / R_0) = 0.65 The scaling at large tau is the same for windtabs and the exospheric approximation, as one would expect. The big difference is how windtabs handles low to moderate optical depths (say, up to tau_* ~ 10), which is what we're observing in the Carina survey - transmission below a few percent at certain energies will be unobservable except for very bright objects. So, I'm not sure the Carina series is the place for it. > > Re: QZ Car, I'll write to Julian and Ross (P)arkin right now. > > Re: tomorrow - yes, it would be great to have you visit. We could add a note about QZ Car with Ross Larkin and Julian as leads right now on the wiki, and the rest of us as co-authors. David, are we still on for Thursday? Otherwise, we’ll see each other at Bartol on Monday. >> >> As for the windtabs paper in the supplement, I think that’s a great idea – but you’ll need Leisa et al.’s approval.
