Hamburg: Ecuador v. Costa Rica
We leave the apartment for the game.
Lots of German flags are in evidence.
A billboard promoting Ecuador at the sbahn station on the way to the game.
A map of the stadium complex. The Hamburg stadium is in a strangely wooded area of the city.
The walk to the stadium.
Some Costa Ricans were giving away bananas. So there were big piles of banana peels all over the place.
Approaching the stadium!
The pregame was quite elaborate.
You can get a good feel for the crowd in this video of the Ecuadoreans taking the field.
There was a wide array of insane hats among the Ecuador fans.
Si se peude! This one was more common, and less insane, but still pretty weird.
Ecuador takes a free kick (see the ball?).
What else is there to do after your team scores a goal?
After the game, we went downtown and had some herring sandwiches.
Then we went to the fanfest, and watched England play Trinidad and Tobago on the big screen. After which, we ate some Trinidadian food...
But that wasn't enough for Jon and Annette, who topped it off with garlic pickles.
We relaxed for a while on a little boat cruise around the Hamburg harbor.
A snack of
currywurst around midnight really hit the spot.
