Swarthmore College Department of Physics and Astronomy

Science Center: Home of Swarthmore Physics and Astronomy

We are a department of eleven permanent members: nine faculty and two lecturers. We have visiting faculty and post docs too. We offer many types of classes, including upper-level seminars, as well as courses for non-majors.  We offer majors in astronomy and astrophysics as well as physics.

Faculty members are active in a variety of research areas and have Swarthmore students as research assistants. This past summer, twenty students worked on research projects in our department. Students regularly publish papers and present results at professional meetings. Honors majors can write senior theses based on their independent research, as part of the external examination component of Swarthmore's honors program.

After graduating, many of our majors attend top graduate schools in physics or astronomy. Others enter fields like teaching, law, medicine, and engineering.
